Happy National Pie Day

January 23, 2013

A slice is nice, but today, on National Pie Day, why not think big and bake a homemade pie for the occasion? Epicurious features well over 1,300 pie recipes, so the hardest part is choosing. Expert Carole Bloom's complete pie primer is a fine place to start, for step-by-step guidance and recommended recipes, including a Classic Double-Crust Apple Pie. I'm partial to the holy trinity of a flaky top, fruity middle, and toothsome bottom but would never argue with a Cherry Lattice or a blueberry pie of almost any sort, even out of season. Some will prefer a winter-proof Tropical Fruit Tart, and then there's a killer four-fork Chocolate-Glazed Chocolate Tart that'll be pitch-perfect for Valentine's Day. Not to be confused with Pi Day on March 14, National Pie Day is a creation of the American Pie Council, which marks the occasion with a list of pie-related events and tastings on its site. Do you have favorite pie recipe you swear by? And how will you be celebrating National Pie Day today?
