The Epicurious Cookbook Spotlight: Sweet 'n' Smoky Meatloaf and Orange Poppyseed Cake

We're continuing to highlight member recipes that are in The Epicurious Cookbook and this week we're featuring Jamie Monahan's Sweet 'n' Smoky Meatloaf and Mary Jean Goodman's Orange Poppyseed Cake. Winter months often lend themselves to comfort foods, and Epicurious member Jamie Monahan (pictured above) turns to a satisfying standby when she's looking to beat the chill. Her Sweet 'n' Smoky Meatloaf is comfort food at its finest, featuring the harmonious pairing of brown sugar and bacon. Monahan has perfected the recipe over the years and advises meatloaf makers to smell the meat mixture before baking it in order to "pick up the scent of every ingredient." If something is lacking from the aroma, she'll up the amount of seasonings until it's just right. No meal would be complete without dessert. And when it comes to winter sweets, Mary Jean Goodman knows her citrus cakes. She's been testing and retesting various iterations of her Orange Poppyseed Cake for years, resulting in the perfect mix of tangy fruit flavor and tender cake. If you aren't a fan of oranges, try substituting other citrus flavors, such as lemon or grapefruit, into her recipe. A silky vanilla glaze is the final touch atop this showstopping dessert.
