For the Good Times, There's Fondue

Every winter, I get together with a group of good friends to do something we all love: consume cheese and drink wine! We follow the pungent perfume of ripe and moldy rinds all the way to Artisanal Fromagerie, Bistro, and Wine Bar, where good wines are always flowing and the atmosphere feels consistently holiday-festive. While the restaurant's cheese flight menu is darn tempting--Epoisses! Monte Enebro! Valdeon!--when it comes down to it, I'm there for one thing: fondue. To my mind, there are few better ways to group-dine (though tapas come close). What's more fun than dipping dainty cubes of bread, apple slices, and little fingerling potatoes into bubbling vats of gorgeous melty goodness? Nothing, I say. A bunch of friends sitting around dunking things on sticks into cheese is pretty much paradise in my book. But as much as I love these outings, I don't make fondue at home. So I'm setting out to change that (along with my husband's mind on the whole fondue thing). Epi has got some great recipes, and I'm determined to have some fondue fun with friends at my apartment this winter. And I'm pretty sure my toddler--who takes after her mama and loves both cheese and dipping things--will be right there with me (there will be lots of blowing and cooling, mind you).
