Chris Culliver, 49ers Cornerback, Apologizes for Anti-Gay Comments

January 31, 2013

Chris Culliver is doing his best to remove his foot from his mouth.

The San Francisco 49ers cornerback has offered up one of the least convincing apologies in recent memory, following anti-gay comments he made Wednesday during Super Bowl media day.

Asked by Artie Lange whether anyone in the locker room is gay, Culliver replied in the negative, adding that he "don't do the gay guys" and would take serious issue with a homosexual teammate.

"We ain't got no gay people on the team," Culliver told Lange. "They gotta get up out here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff. ... Nah, can't be ... Gotta come out 10 years after [retiring.]"

Facing major backlash for the rant, Culliver issued the following statement yesterday:

"The derogatory comments I made were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience."

Culliver's personal public relations representative, Theodore Palmer, added that her client "celebrates the differences in others" and his reply was "interpreted wrong."

Oops. Our bad! We really should have parsed his words a lot better.
