Geraldo Rivera to Run For U.S. Senate?

January 31, 2013

Geraldo Rivera is mulling a run for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey in 2014 as a Republican, the TV and radio personality revealed on his show today.

"I mentioned this only briefly to my wife ... but I am and I have been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey," said Rivera.

"I am truly contemplating running against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker."

"I'm not going to drill this out, because obviously I've got commitments to Fox and to here at the radio program and I'm really having a great time," Rivera adds.

"But I figure at my age, if I'm going to do it, I've got to do it. And there don't seen to be any Republicans ready to run against Cory Booker, the popular Newark mayor."

Fun fact: Rivera is 69 years old! Some people age well.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Lautenberg, 89, hasn't said if he'll seek reelection, but Booker, the Democratic Mayor of Newark, is almost definitely running.

Democrats will be favored to hold the seat, regardless of whether Lautenberg or Booker is the nominee; all bets are off if those two square off in a primary.

So far, no Republicans are in the running for Lautenberg's Senate seat, making it possible for Geraldo to make a serious run if he were in fact interested.

N.J.'s other seat is held by Robert Menendez, who was reelected in 2012.
