Jeremy Irons on Gay Marriage: What About Incest?!?

April 4, 2013

In an interview this week with The Huffington Post, actor Jeremy Irons says he doesn't have a "strong feeling" in either direction about the ongoing gay marriage debate.

Well, except this concern:

Taxes are an interesting topic, he says, "because could a father not marry his son?"

There are laws against incest, but "it's not incest between men," Irons counters, adding:

"Incest is there to protect us against inbreeding, but men don't breed, so incest wouldn't cover that. Now if that was so, then if I wanted to pass on my estate without death duties, I could marry my son and pass on my estate to him."

Irons comes across as relatively thoughtful in the above clip, but it's not hard to imagine what Bill Maher would say to this strange point.

Or even Bill O'Reilly, who believes gay marriage opponents have no legal argument.

In the end, Irons says he wishes the "best of luck" to anyone living with another person... but then he also makes an off-handed comparison being marrying a man and marrying a dog. Sigh.
