Drinking on Mad Men and Making Classic Cocktails at Home

April 9, 2013

The return of Mad Men inevitably brings cocktails to mind and over on our sister site, Bon Appetit, Matt Gross dissects the many drinking moments on the season six premiere. As Gross reports, the episode opened with a Curacao-spiked Blue Hawaii, which is quickly followed up by what looks like an Old Fashioned. Later on, we see Don get sick from drinking too much whiskey and the Draper's New Year's Eve gathering features multiple bottles of wine as well as Galliano. For more on Mad Men's drinking culture, including a theory about the growing popularity of coffee and pot, check out Gross' post, A Blue Drink on the White Sand. Cocktails are also the focus of Michael Ruhlman's Friday Cocktail Hour series featured on our Community Table. Thus far, Ruhlman has spotlighted a bunch of classics, including a Tom Collins, a Vesper, a Rye Old Fashioned, and a Dark and Stormy. Along with a recipe, Ruhlman usually offers a bit of back story on the drink, and sometimes a little cocktail-making advice, such as the importance of using a lot of lime juice in a Dark and Stormy or how to mix up a Hasty Negroni. Head over to Ruhlman's Community Table page for all his recipes and tips. And for even more on cocktails, including recipes and how-to videos, peruse Epicurious' cocktail coverage.
