Kick Up Your Party Outfit With This One Little Trick

April 12, 2013

Black dresses and tops are essential parts of your going-out wardrobe, especially for the summer party season. But the thing is, it is for everyone else, too—especially with this black and white trend majorly happening for the season. So let's take a cue from these style stars who really stood out on the red carpet in party black with one special weapon: polka dots. Or more specifically, dotted Swiss—the pretty prints embroidered into the sheer fabric.

The Kate Young for Target collection is full of pretty dresses (especially for all those summer weddings you're attending). To add a little extra edge to a girly frock like Katie's, go with a dotted peek-a-boo panel. Kinda rock 'n' roll. The dottage also makes a black top layered under a blazer that much more interesting, like on Michelle Williams (who always just kills it on the red carpet, doesn't she?).

A dainty smattering of dots on a modestly placed décolletage makes an LBD effortlessly transition from day-to-night. Mindy Kaling's TV alter-ego Dr. Mindy Lahiri could totally wear this shift dress from her day job straight out to some disastrous date with just a quick switch-out to sexy heels, a colorful clutch and a few chunky chain link bracelets.

Don't think that polka dots are too girly to wear out to fancy formal events. Take a cue from French model/actress Gaia Weiss and break up the pattern to avoid that full-on polka dotted 80s prom look.
