Bret Easton Ellis Banned From GLAAD Awards, Goes Off on Twitter

April 21, 2013

Plenty of people laughed at Jennifer Lawrence's flub of former President Bill Clinton's name on stage at the GLAAD Awards Saturday night in L.A.

Bret Easton Ellis was not one of those people.

The writer revealed that the gay rights organization banned him from attending due to his controversial past comments. Ellis posted on Twitter:

"As a gay man in a domestic partnership who plans to get married I'm sad to hear I've been banned by GLAAD from attending tomorrow's event."

"GLAAD is supposedly 'furious' about my tweets. And I'm guessing not the ones concerning my boyfriend or how sexy I think Adam Driver is."

No.

In the past, Ellis has said watching Glee is like "stepping into a puddle of HIV" and agreed with Paris Hilton about gay men on Grindr being diseased.

He later suggested that Matt Bomer would be a terrible choice for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie - which Ellis wants to write - because he is gay.

Or this: "If you think Modern Family has a progressive attitude about gayness then you're a retrograde tool. The fact that it's being lauded: a joke."

In any case, they banned him, and he's not happy about it ... he says they even told a friend to tell him not to Tweet about the matter. Wonder why ...

He adds, "After GLAAD banned me they told the friend who was bringing me to the event to WARN "Bret not to go public or TWEET about this decision."

GLAAD tells E! News in response:

"GLAAD spoke with the guest who was planning to bring Bret about some of Bret's recent remarks, which the gay community responded negatively to."

"We also asked for a time to sit down with Bret. They decided to replace Bret with a different guest and there has been no response to the offer of a meeting."

"We hope his tweets don't overshadow the high-profile allies and everyday LGBT people who will be onstage tonight advocating for equality in the Boy Scouts, marriage and across the U.S."

A nice thought. But Bret will always try to overshadow something.
