Art of the Barbecue

May 14, 2013

Artists have around the U.S. have turned their skills to backyard grilling for a new online exhibition, Hamburger Cheeseburger Hotdog. The show features lots of illustration and hand-drawn lettering, explains organizer and curator Aaron Cohen. "You'll see plenty of hamburger and hotdog art, along with one fairly disturbing piece depicting cheeseburger birth," he adds. "Super Precious Art Gallery is a project I started at the beginning of last year to have group art shows centered around a specific theme," says Cohen. "The idea was to produce poster prints that might appeal to people who don't think of themselves as art collectors. I have a lot of illustrator friends who make art I like, and I thought others might like it, too. It's currently an online only gallery, but we do have openings somewhere around Boston for each new show." Cohen's background is in marketing and in organizing events, such as last weekend's Boston Bacon and Beer Festival. (He also invited artists to submit work to his online Bacon and Beer show last year.) So is he a tong-wielding backyard griller himself, since he came up with Hamburger Cheeseburger Hotdog? "I do love to BBQ, but BBQ in a Northern way, which I believe is called grilling in the South!" he says with a grin. Pictured: "Mumford in Buns," by Chris Piascik, Millville, MA
