With all the hubbub surrounding Yahoo's billion dollar-plus acquisition of Tumblr, it has somehow gone unreported that Tumblr founder David Karp was Serious Eats' very first Chief Technology Officer. David worked very closely with me throughout 2006, which was when Serious Eats was being developed (we launched in December of that year). He was developing a proprietary Content Management System (CMS) for us that had quite a few elements that eventually found their way into Tumblr. This was before Tumblr as we know it existed, but David was then referring to it as "tumble blogging."
We ended up not using what David developed for us, but it was clear to me back then that David was going to leave his mark in the blogging universe. I can't say that I predicted that he would eventually sell Tumblr for more than a billion dollars, but anyone who spent time with David back then knew he was an orignal coder and developer of the highest order. So congrats and big props to the now extremely wealthy David, who remains both a big fan of Serious Eats and a big thinker.
