The complete Collection of Elizabeth Taylor at Christies sold for a total of $183.5 million. The overwhelmingly successful three-part event sold out 100 percent, with seven lots selling at more than $5 million and 30 lots bringing in more than $1 million. Christie's Reports $5.7 Billion in 2011 Sales

World-renowned auction house Christie’s announced total sales in 2011 of $5.7 billion. Sales are up 14 percent over 2010. While the auctioneer reported growth for all art categories, the Post-War and Contemporary, at $1.2 billion in sales, was the top category. Asian Art was the second highest group at $890.1 million. Private sales also posted $808.6 million for the year ending, showing a 50-percent increase over the previous year.... Read More

On November 15 at the Pop Culture: Rock and Pop Memorabilia auction in London the house will offer a black suit worn by the Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious from 1978, estimated at $15,990 - $23,985; a wild velvet jacket worn by T. Rex’s Marc Bolan circa 1975-1977, estimated at $7,995 - $11,193; a black leather vest worn by Johnny Cash circa 1964-1969, estimated at $3,198 - $4,797; and one of Michael Jackson’s trademark fedoras from 1984, estimated at $2,399 - $3,198.... Auction house Christie’s announced sales for the week of more than $7.4 million. The auctioneer's 19th Century European Art auction brought in $6.61 million, with 47 of 106 lots offered being sold. Painter Giovanni Boldini’s, Marthe Régnier (1905), an oil-on canvas work, was the highest selling lot at $1.88 million.... Read More

Christie's and Artist Takashi Murakami To Hold Auction Benefitting Japan

Auction house Christie's is teaming up with Takashi Murakami and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., to provide support for the victims of the March 11, 2011, Tohoku-Pacific earthquake in Japan. Artist Takashi Murakami will select the artists who will donate their works to the relief effort in an upcoming auction to be held in New York City. An announcement with complete details for the auction will be made in early fall. What is known at this point is that the artists contributing are some of the biggest names in contemporary art.

$53 Million Dollar "Tete" Sale Sets French Record in Art

Arts & Culture The art market is popping ever so effervescently these days, as Christie's International announced the $53-million sales price of a limestone head by sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. The amount sets a new record for art sold at a French auction. According to Christie's own pre-auction projections, it was a surprise to all as the price paid for Modigliani's "Tete" was 10 times more than the auctioneer's its low-end projection.
