Its history is a uniquely fascinating tale: what used to house a coconut distillery and a cinnamon plantation, the island became overrun by rats, pigs and ferrel cattle, overgrown by weeds and coconut trees after the distillery closed down in 1970. Almost 30 years later, a South African wilderness outfitter, Wilderness Safaris, assumed control of and took to restoring the entire island, reintroducing native flora and fauna, making the island a flawlessly ideal sanctuary.
