Luxury Cruises: There will be a cruise from Southampton, England, to New York City to note the passing of the 100th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the RSM Titantic. The commemorative cruise, which is offered by Fred Olsen Cruises and Miles Morgan Travel, is a 12-night affair that follows the same itinerary as that of the first run of the-then largest passenger steamship in the world. While the cruise date is nearly three years away, it is noteworthy that the most luxurious of cabins available on the Fred Olsen cruiser, the Balmoral, are already sold out.
The cruise on the Balmoral will feature the same menus and musical entertainment as presented on the Titanic. A special on-board memorial ceremony will take place when the ship crosses the area where the Titantic struck the iceberg that caused it to sink.
The luxury liner will go through Cherbourg, which is on the French coast, and then into the Irish port, Cobh. There will be a special tour of the Irish city that will offer passengers further insight and details relating to the Titantic. Additionally, historians will be onboard as well to convey additional information about both the tragedy and the most luxurious and "unsinkable" ship of its time. Shipbuilders Harland and Wolf built the RSM Titantic for the White Star Line.
The cruise will carry on to Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is the final resting place of many of the passengers on board the Titantic, before sailing into New York City, the planned final destination for the ill-fated ship. The Titantic 100th Anniversary Cruise will begin April 8 and conclude in NYC on April 20, 2012.
