Luxury Cruise News: Following the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake that recently hit Haiti, certain cruise liners have continued docking their luxury vessels at private beaches, located just 60 miles from the devastation.
According to the Guardian, the Independence of the Seas disembarked on Friday at Labadee, a Royal Caribbean resort located on the northern coast of Haiti. A second Royal Caribbean ship, the Navigator of the Seas, is also scheduled to dock at the heavily-guarded port.
Many are finding the practice of docking within such close proximity to the devastation controversial, while others are applauding the aid efforts that are being implemented by the cruise line. Royal Caribbean has promised to donate 100 percent of its proceeds from the port of call at Labadee, and has pledged to donate an additional $1 million to benefit the ongoing relief effort. Pallets of rice, beans, powdered milk, water and canned foods have already been delivered, with more expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
