The Annual Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner, held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Atlanta, is the King Center's primary fundraising initiative. First held in 1983, it honours individuals and organisations that exemplify a strong sense of social responsibility, in the spirit and tradition of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
Individuals honoured in recent years have included, in 2002, Tony Bennett for his lifetime achievements as both an activist and entertainer, and Fannie Mae, chairman and CEO of Franklin E Raines. In 2003 the pair so-honoured were Henry "Hank" Aaron and Billye Aaron of the Ford Motor Company while in 2004 it was the turn of U2's singer Bono and Robert J Ulrich of the Target Corporation & Target Stores. The 2005 "honorees" are basketball hero Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Duane Ackerman from the BellSouth Corporation.
