The Belmont Stakes, at Belmont Park, is the oldest of the US Triple Crown Races. First run in 1867, it is one of the most famous horse races in the world, with a purse of US$1 million to the winner.
The race, the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown, is named after August Belmont, a leading 19th-century banker and racing man. He was also the first President of the Jockey Club in 1867.
The other races that make up the US Triple Crown are the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. There are 26 horses that have been eligible to win the prize coming into Belmont and 11 have succeeded, the last being Affirmed in 1978. Recently, Silver Charm, Real Quiet and Charismatic have all been denied.
