Amazing Golf Courses: Pine Valley Golf Club

Posted: Apr. 27th, 2009  |  By JustLuxe Team
Luxury Golf Courses: Pine Valley Golf Club is regularly ranked the number one course in Golf Digest's list of America's 100 greatest courses, with good reason.

Originally built in 1912 by George Crump, Pine Valley has been built and enhanced by a long list of architects from Golf's Golden Age since it opened in 1918, including Harry Colt, Hugh Wilson, George Thomas, William Flynn, Charles Blair Macdonald, Walter Travis, Robert Hunter, A.W. Tillinghast, Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross, William Fownes, Charles Alison and Perry Maxwell. Pine Valley raised the standard for golf course design and many went on to design many other great courses as well.

Pine Valley is said to possess more world class holes than any other course as well as the finest eighteen green complexes in addition to an array of one, two and three hole shots. The Pine Valley Course is an 18 hole regulation length Private Equity course with Bent Grass.

Although it is regularly considered one of the world's best courses, Pine Valley has not played host to any major professional golf tournaments, mostly because there is not enough room on the course to accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. The only national game was in 1962, when Pine Valley Shell's Wonderful World of Golf match between Gene Littler and Byron Nelson. One day a year, Pine Valley is open to the public when it hosts the Crump Cup, a nationally recognized tournament featuring elite Mid-Amateur players. It also hosted the Walker Cup, an amateur competition between teams from the United States and Great Britain & Ireland, in 1936 and 1985.

Pine Valley is currently managed by Charles Raudenbush, as the Golf Professional.
