St. Andrews Old Course Sets Standard

Luxury Golf: St. Andrews Old Course in Scotland is practically hallowed ground for legions of golfers.

The 18-hole public course has hosted practically every great golfer from Bobby Jones to Tiger Woods. Over the years, it has hosted not only golf greats, like Jim Watt OBE and Phil Mickelson, but also amateur golfers like former US President Bill Clinton and American actor Michael Douglas.

As one of the oldest courses in the world, known as the Home of Golf, St. Andrews originally consisted of 22 holes, 11 out and 11 back. In 1764, the course was only 18 holes and created what became the standard round of golf throughout the world. It has gone through many evolutions, as golf has become ever more popular through the centuries.

The most prestigious title in world golf, the Open Championship was first played on the Old Course at St. Andrews in 1873, and St Andrews has since held the event more often than anywhere else. St. Andrews has also hosted the Dunhill Cup and the subsequent Dunhill Links Championship have been played at St Andrews since 1985. The famous course has also held the Walker Cup, the Amateur Championship and a host of other professional and amateur competitions for men and women.

Coming tournaments include the Junior Ladies' Open and the Boys' Open, from August 3-6, 2009 as well as other annual events.

While St. Andrews Old Course is the most ancient, the St. Andrews Links Trust has grown to include six other courses as well: New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum, Balgove and Castle.

After a long day on the links, get a good night's rest at the luxurious Fairmont St. Andrews. Set on a 520-acre estate, the hotel exudes opulence and offers its guests a truly lavish experience.
