Inaugurated in 1931 and with a seating capacity of around 25,000, the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is the most famous bullring in Spain. As one of the nation’s pastimes, a trip to Madrid would be incomplete without actually witnessing a bullfight, so it is advised that tourists plan accordingly as, like most sports, bullfighting has a season as well. However, as the bullfighting season starts in March and ends in December, the time frame to catch one is actually quite lengthy and chances are that visitors will be in town for one or two events. At a minimum, bullfights are held each Sunday during the season and holidays and the San Isidro Fiesta also bring more action to the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas.
Travelers in Madrid on business will also have a prime opportunity to watch a bullfight as matches start at either 6 or 7 p.m. and they go for a few hours, allowing people an opportunity to finish their dealings for the day before heading to the ring.
