San Diego Goes Whale Crazy With Birth of Baby Orca

Posted: Jun. 19th, 2013  |  By Michael Pearse

San Diego might as well be renamed Whales for all of the focus SeaWorld and local wildlife has been getting in the past few days, but lets face it, who can resist the mysterious wiles of majestic orcas? If the hype over the newly named baby orca is any indication, no one.

A four-month-old male orca calf at Sea World San Diego has a name, which was chosen by nearly 12,000 fans on Facebook during a week long contest, park officials announced.

About 40 percent of the voters chose the winning name Makani, which in Hawaiian means “the wind,” for the calf born to mother Kasatka on Valentine’s Day, according to Sea World.
