While the Giants worked their way to another World Series win last weekend, the San Francisco Art Institute was hosting a different sort of sport. Local group The Arts of Fashion Foundation closed their annual Symposium with an awards ceremony and reception for the 50 finalists in its student competition, with winners receiving internships with fashion brands and scholarships to the group’s summer MasterClass series in Paris. Founder Nathalie Doucet decided to shift away from a traditional runway show and instead chose an art gallery approach to view the designs. Most of this year’s events were free to the public and with the professional lectures, films, and ongoing access to the design process it proved to be a real festival of fashion. And if that wasn’t enough, Doucet arranged something special for the international group of students, many of whom had never traveled to San Francisco.
