Six Famous Attractions in Madrid

Posted: Jun. 9th, 2012  |  By Michael Pearse

Madrid is an elegantly vibrant city full of pleasant people, dining, and sightseeing, making this a prime location for your next vacation. With such an array of places to see, restaurants to dine at and things to do in Madrid, make sure that some of the following locations are on your list of things to see while visiting for a firsthand look at some of Spain’s most impressive history, arts and culture.

Museo del Prado - As the main national art museum in Spain, the Museo del Prado contains one of the best gatherings of European art that ranges from the 12th to 19th centuries. As such, it is the single most visited museum in Spain and is one of the top 20 art museums worldwide. With over 20,000 pieces of art in its collection, this is a premier destination for anyone with a semblance of appreciation for art.

Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas - Considered the home of bullfighting in Spain, Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas was inaugurated in 1931. The site is also often used for large concerts and miscellaneous sporting activities but has remained the nation’s central bullfighting ring due to its capacity and architectural beauty.

Museo Reina Sofia - Officially named the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the Reina Sofia is the country’s primary modern art museum. With a focus on Spanish artists, Museo Reina Sofia has collections of two of Spain’s most prominent artists: Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Without a doubt, the most visited piece of art within the museum is Picasso’s Guernica.

Palacio Real de Madrid - The official home of Spain’s royal family in Madrid, the Palacio Real is really used only for official events but is usually open for browsing by the general public. The ornate baroque artwork utilized by the structure as well as the various gardens and plazas around the site make this one of the more beautiful palace-fortresses to see in person.

Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales - Opened as a museum in 1960 but founded in 1559, the Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales displays some of the finest architecture, statues and religious relics publicly available. One of the most notable relics housed at the museum are alleged pieces of Christ’s cross.

Teatro Real - Though constructed in 1850, the Teatro Real has a surprisingly modern feel to its exterior. Nevertheless, the interior is in stark contrast to the façade and prominently displays rich colors, intricate accents and a breathtaking stage and seating area. A visit to this fine establishment is well worth the visit, but a tip there wouldn’t be complete without actually experiencing one of the many wonderful operas performed throughout the year.
