The Mirage opened in November 1989, setting a new standard of hotel excellence for Las Vegas and sparking a transformation that would make the city one of the world's most popular resort destinations. Its success ignited a $9 billion building expansion, lasting more than a decade, surpassing the anticipated intensity and speed with which these properties would proliferate.

The goal of the $630 million Mirage was to build a hotel so overriding in stature that it would be a reason in and of itself for visitors to come to Las Vegas in much the same way that Disney attracts people to Orlando, Fla.
