The Mirage opened in November 1989, setting a new standard of hotel excellence for Las Vegas and sparking a transformation that would make the city one of the world's most popular resort destinations. Its success ignited a $9 billion building expansion, lasting more than a decade, surpassing the anticipated intensity and speed with which these properties would proliferate.

The goal of the $630 million Mirage was to build a hotel so overriding in stature that it would be a reason in and of itself for visitors to come to Las Vegas in much the same way that Disney attracts people to Orlando, Fla. The first new resort built in the city in 15 years, The Mirage set a new standard for resort hotels in Las Vegas and around the world.

This "new" Las Vegas, featuring the elegance of Bellagio, the excitement of MGM Grand and the sophistication of Mandalay Bay, now attracts a vacationing public that largely bypassed the city in the past. Younger, affluent visitors now find that Las Vegas as a travel destination offers something for everyone. So much so that in 2005, more than 37 million people visited Las Vegas compared to 18 million visitors in 1989, when the reinvention of Las Vegas began.

Offering a unique blend of luxurious accommodations, fine dining and shopping, distinctive landscaping, world-class entertainment and a first-class casino, The Mirage introduced the concept of a complete destination resort.

The Mirage captures the imaginations of its guests with its Polynesian design, a nine-story tall atrium filled with palm trees and other South Seas horticulture, Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, a 20,000-gallon aquarium and, of course, the eruption of its world-famous volcano.

The Mirage's guest rooms feature rich hues and imported fabrics in a refined atmosphere of sophisticated comfort. Many are available with breathtaking views of the tropical pool, majestic mountains or Las Vegas Strip.
