India may be the most fascinating country in the world. It is, at its core, exotic. New Delhi is an unusual place where the latest model chauffeured Mercedes may share the same road with a disheveled man totting along with a donkey and cart. The manic pace and noise of incessant car horns boggles the mind of this crowded city of 19 million people. In the middle of this beautiful madness, is a literal oasis of peace calm and tranquility. A city escape behind elevated walls which lead into a forest of trees, meandering water elements and avant-garde designed buildings that double as fine objects d’ art. This respite from everything chaotic is the Roseate, New Delhi.

The Roseate New Delhi

Just 15 minutes from the airport, guests enter a gate into a courtyard of trees and a twenty-foot wall designed with brass in the shape of fichus leaves. The nattily-dressed staff welcomes guests who then enter through doors large enough for an elephant to pass. One’s head begins to spin taking in the flood of visual impressions of spiraling staircases and walls, a massive rotating obelisk and a stained glass wall dazzling with vibrant color in front of a crystal blue reflecting pool. And that’s just the lobby! The further into the property that you transcend the more that the utter chaos of Delhi begins to fade away into a distant memory. The smells and sounds and crowed spaces are replaced with fresh air waifting with incense and the omnipresent water features of swimming pools and reflection ponds.

The Roseate New Delhi

This is by no accident, the property is Delhi’s only urban resort and is spread over eight acres of refreshing greenery and serene water-bodies. There are over a thousand trees on the property generating this fresh air as well as absorbing the noise and chaos from the surrounding city. It never feels crowded there, that is for elsewhere in the city and exactly what locals and tourist are seeking to escape.

The architect, Khun Lek Bunnag, created this oasis based on the five elements of the Hinduism. Air, water, fire, earth and sky are obvious and nuanced into to each element of the retreat’s structures, designs and décor. It is ultra-modern, yet derivative of the five-century-old Moghul architecture that is the foundation of Delhi’s architectural heritage. Guests will find themselves strolling the grounds of the property with no particular destination, lost in the appreciation of the high, domed ceilings, elevated steps over water bodies, or the imposing Isfahan pillars that resemble misplaced pawns from the chess pieces of the gods.

In India there is nothing bland. There are no bland food, fashions, art or even music. Everything draws some sort of opinion. The design of the Roseate is no different. as it seems that a glance in any direction will create a feeling or emotion. The resorts 50 room and suites are no different and the main shapes that you’ll immediately notice are curves, domes and circles. They are exquisitely integrated in the design and décor with dramatic domed ceilings with evocative lighting, bold curved wall panels of dark brown and contrasting alabaster, the elliptical bath and even a rounded altar that doubles as the sink. Each room is quite spacious with curved couches, a king-sized bed and every modern amenity for the worldly traveler. These accommodations are made for romance as well with a large bath in the main room area. Beyond the rear door is a lovely patio which looks onto the secluded pool that runs the length of the building.  Guests step from their patio into this 335-foot-long body of water which resembles a jungle river, sided by fichus trees and branches the hover over the expanse. A few dips and the stifling heat of Delhi is soon forgotten.

The dining experience is as exquisite as the hotels design or accommodations. Their all-day dining restaurant, Kiyan, serves fine European cuisine as well as Thai cuisines and modern Indian fare. The restaurant is beautifully designed with views facing the hotel's park-like grounds and four eccentric and towering columns. The scene at night is quite romantic as couples dine al fresco by candlelight.

Under a tented and draped canopy, the iconic paintings of Park Seung Mo adorn the walls while candles seem to flicker everywhere and sexy lounge music adds to the ambiance. The capable staff dash about to take care of the diners' whims as couples nibble at quaint tables while groups of friends share the evening over long tables. Off to the side there is a large window letting the curious see what is going on in the open kitchen as chefs hustle over steaming pots, sizzling skillets and flaming woks.
