As one of Madrid's most centrally located squares, Puerta del Sol is an ideal place to begin your excursion in Madrid. Its name stems from the 15th century when the sun would fall on the eastern city gate, thus being called Puerta del Sol or "Sun Gate." Today's square, created in the 19th century, features a large equestrian statue of King Carlos III as well as the El Oso y El Madroño, a 20-ton statue of a bear eating fruits from a tree.
