As spectator sports go, polo is pretty exotic. It is, after all, the sport of kings, and seeing a match played in Palm Beach or Bridgehampton is always a truly special event. But seeing it played under the shadow of the Statue of Liberty while sipping on Veuve Clicquot Champagne, ranks up there for coolest location to watch a match.
Veuve Clicquot brought polo back to Manhattan in 2010 with the inaugural Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governor’s Island, and since then the prestigious tournament has also been staged in Los Angeles. On May 31, the Classic will take place at Liberty State Park in the shadow of the iconic statue with sweeping views of Manhattan for a backdrop. This year part of the proceeds will go to City Harvest, a charity helping feed the nearly two million New Yorkers without food.
World famous polo star and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras will lead his team Black Watch in the match. And for the first time ever, Veuve is offering a First Access ticket for $125, which will grant polo-goers a reserved spot on the premier ferry from Manhattan as well as Veuve Clicquot sunglasses and a sun umbrella. The French Champagne brand has a long association with the sport of polo and has sponsored illustrious polo events around the world. Last year’s Classic at Liberty State Park was hosted by Matthew McConaughey, and Prince Harry has participated in years past.
