Amid the hubris and hustle of downtown Washington, D.C., there's an eco-friendly oasis. That quiet retreat is none other than Nusta Spa, the only green day spa in our nation's capital.
Here, rather than being greeted by the standard wall waterfall, Nusta guests are received by a lobby that formerly housed a bank, accented by a wooden wall that once adorned a Pennsylvania farmhouse. Every handsome touch was outfitted with natural care, despite the additional expense involved.
Some lounge furniture is recycled bamboo, in retro, earth toned style. Other tables, chairs and sofas were
manufactured by a company that uses recycled packaging for its material.
Nusta is finishing a system in which the spa's own water will be internally recycled for certain usages - a process known in the industry as "gray water" (and as for the waterfall, theirs is only used for special events). LED lighting reduces energy consumption by 75 percent and faux plants are interspersed with natural ones in an inconspicuous manner.
Though Nusta is the first spa to achieve Gold LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, it's not all about the decor. There are signature treatments developed by manager Brad Drummer, most notably the Interpretive Touch® massage.
This treatment involves not only the therapists intuitive reading of your physiology, but solicits your selection of music. There are also special treatments for reflexology, pregnancy and a Soothing Stone Massage. Nusta also boasts its own product line.
Waiting areas are furnished to at once provide privacy and the option to kibbutz with fellow guests. Each treatment room features a notebook-sized computer, the better to provide your musical preference from Nusta's vast library of downloads.
