There’s just a bit more time left until spring will be upon us and the beautiful 75 and sunny San Diego weather will return. This March, Seaport Village will be holding the Spring Busker Festival—the only festival of its kind in Southern California. What’s a Busker you ask?...
Well, if you’ve been to Central Park in New York City or visited San Francisco’s Pier 39, chances you’ve seen them — frozen, gold-painted “statues” that come to life after being fed a nickel or a duo of swagger-ific entertainers effortlessly doing flips off one another. A Busker is a street performer and include such talents as “French” mimes (which have become the traditional symbol of the craft), as well as other talented individuals. Buskers have been adding color and life to urban areas for centuries, peddling their unique skills for donations.
One of San Diego’s most unique traditions, the Busker Festival draws hundreds of people to the city’s quaint Sea Port Village. From acrobats and dancers to musicians and magicians, the Village will come alive March 23rd through 24th between 12 pm and 5 pm. Additionally, Buskers After Dark will take place on March 23 and will feature a DJ, drink specials, and slightly more adult performances, so admittance will be 18 and over.
The talented participants are not only doing what they love, they are competing for a People’s Choice Award, whose prize allowance will give the winner an opportunity to take their act on the road. Throughout the event, voting booths will be available for visitors to cast their vote for their favorite performance. But it’s not only the Buskers who are up for prizes; the Busker Festival includes several giveaways and prizes, which include gift certificates to Seaport Villages unique restaurants and stores.
Guests who cast their vote for their most-loved performance will also have a chance to be selected for a $100 Seaport Village gift certificate. This bizarre medley of sword swallowing fiends and fire juggling cyclists is not to be missed, but Seaport Village encourages all attendees to remember to bring these passionate artists some recognition. Don’t forget to tip!
