Casa Del Mar Revived by Celebrity Designer

Casa Del Mar has had some work done, recently revealing new penthouse suites decorated by Rooms & Gardens, as well as new lobby lounge reimagined by celebrity designer Michael S. Smith. Offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the refreshed rooms feature Venetian-inspired furnishings and have been designed to resemble stylish Italian seaside villas.

Priced from $2,700 to $4,200 per night, each of the three new suites feel like a private townhouse with its own interior staircase, fireplace, raffia-wallpapered bookcases, and a second guest bath. The large master bathroom is outfitted with Italian Calacatta marble floors and walls, silver-leaf light fixtures, whirlpool bathtubs and complimentary movies on demand. The Presidential Suite has two bedrooms, a living and dining room, guest bath, bar, Bang & Olufsen stereo system and hydrothermal massage tubs. The room is also accented with vintage artwork including 1930s maps of Santa Monica.

The lobby lounge, featuring a new check-in area, is accessed via a grand double staircase entrance. Michael S. Smith (who has decorated the homes of countless celebrities from Malibu to the White House) used Spanish tiles and custom chandeliers with hand-blown glass beading to lend a romantic air to the room.

Designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style by L.A. architect Charles F. Plummer, this historic “palace by the sea” opened in 1926, debuting as as Club Casa Del Mar for Hollywood’s elite. In 1999, The Edward Thomas Collection bought the property and restored it to its former glory, reimagining it as a luxury hotel with 129 luxury guest rooms.
