Johannesburg, the Lightning Capital is celebrating the 9 day SABC Soweto Festival of Lights starting December 14th. Featuring local student performances, family events, and centered about the kicking off of a "true African Christmas" – a curious feat for what evolved from a chiefly western religious holiday.
The inaugural SABC Soweto Festival of Lights – a Johannesburg City Parks initiative in partnership with Imagineering cc, kicks off on14-22 December 2012 at 18:30. The 9 days event is aimed at providing the community with an opportunity to observe the festive period in special celebration and to allow the prevalence of a mood typical of a ‘true African Christmas’ to begin.
At the touch of a light switch by both the Executive Mayor, Cllr Parks Mpho Tau and Mrs Pilisiwe Twala-Tau the Christmas lighting will occur in unison in Chris Hani and Rissik Streets as well as in Vincent Tshabalala Road.
