Bringing a more than merely welcome infusion of development and community outreach, wealthy mining magnate Patrice Motsepe has pledged R500 to the Soweto area of Johannesburg, money that could go a long way towards eliminating numerous social ills. The philanthropic millionaire is a model the wealthy the world over might look to follow.

Recently, Motsepe was in Soweto to bring leaders of several community-based organisations up to speed with ways in which they could access the funds, held in trust under the Motsepe Foundation. The gathering, at the DOCC’s rugby field in Orlando East, formed part of the foundation’s nationwide information-sharing roadshow. More than 500 people attended the Soweto meeting.

The foundation was established in 1999 by Motsepe and his wife, Precious, with the specific objective of assisting with the upliftment of poor communities. Motsepe announced during the foundation’s Soweto leg of the roadshow that the fund was for developmental purposes only.
