Stocks held on to most of their earlier gains as investors digested a Fed announcement at 2:00 p.m. The Fed said raising interest rates to curb inflation was discussed at its meeting in April, but will not have to start anytime soon.

A stellar earnings report from Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) jump-started the rally this morning. Analog Devices (nyse: ADI - news - people ) also surprised investors with better than expected earnings. Retailers Target (nyse: TGT - news - people ) , WalMart (nyse: WMT - news - people ) and BJ's Wholesale Club (nyse: BJ - news - people ) all beat analyst estimates. That news was followed by a slew of analyst upgrades including American Electric Power (nyse: AEP - news - people ) and Ford .

Among losers, Staples (nasdaq: SPLS - news - people ) () posted disappointing profits and revenues for its first quarter.

All three major averages closed in positive territory for the first time in several trading sessions.
