The classics are often the best. Traditional and elegant, the sportswear influence at Dior Homme's SS16 show was made for the young gentlemen who lead privileged lives without a worry in the world. The aesthetic gave off a vibe that this collection was made for the beautiful, wealthy elite who spend their time playing golf and partaking in Polo matches, all whilst drinking the very best in vintage scotch. The collection was a dream come true for those who occupy most of their leisure time in private country clubs, and the show—set at the Paris Tennis Club—made the venue a truly appropriate setting.
Artistic director Kris Van Assche had the classy bourgeoisie boy in mind. But with a hint of rebellion. The devil was in the details as male models paraded down the rose-filled catwalk (two thousand rose bushes were brought into the Paris Tennis Club for the show. White roses, Christian Dior’s favorite flowers, naturally) in classic, pastel-colored polo shirts. The traditional polo contrasted with punky-looking combat trousers in pristine white cotton.
Emblazoned on the lapel of a sharply tailored jacket were random zippers in a zig zag pattern, and subtle, thin, orange trim on ties and collars gave off an almost 3D effect. A dark, navy trench coat looked like something we’ve all seen before, but with a flutter of wind, the coat revealed a bright orange lining that was hard to ignore. Slender ties complimented all the looks, keeping the models contemporary and urban, classy and sophisticated—perfect for the modern aristocrat.
Crocodile skin bomber jackets and an ostrich skin coat were lust-worthy pieces, ensuring that Dior kept its reputation for dressing the elite. A blackout color palette disguised trainers and the classic trouser suit had playful details like zip up hemlines, showing that Dior is keeping in touch with the cool kids.
Diamond-pattern vests (the kind you would often find in your dad’s wardrobe) were updated to appeal to the modern man with patterns coming out in bad-ass camouflage contrasted with good-boy navy. This good boy/bad boy dichotomy was what made the show exciting and gave a much needed zing to otherwise boring staple pieces. Girls, watch out, because the Dior boys might look like innocent angels but inside lurks a hidden, irresistible (and well-dressed) bad boy.
