To meet the demands of travelers seeking a good night’s sleep, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has launched a new long-haul cabin for Business fliers that includes fully lie-flat seats. Instead of merely announcing the upgrades, SAS set up a little competition in the middle of the busy Oslo Airport in Norway, challenging people to fall asleep as quickly as possible. 

Featuring Hästens bedding and adjustable mood lighting designed to lull you into a restful sleep, a makeshift cabin was set up in the airport for people to try out. SAS even brought a sleep researcher so they could keep track of the nap’s quality with electrodes that recorded each slumberous stage. Each person had only 15 minutes to pass out, which didn’t pose a problem for the winner, who fell asleep in only six minutes and three seconds. For his “efforts,” the prized sleeper was awarded with two tickets to New York in SAS’s long-haul cabin. 

“It was an exciting experiment to investigate the comfort of our new seats. Our customers have given us very good feedback since the launch of our new long haul cabin and we look forward to launch one updated aircraft per month this year,” says Marianne Orderud, Marketing Manager SAS Norway.

The first aircraft to offer this cabin became available in mid-February, with the second planned for late March.
