With the slumping economy spurring on countless suppliers of online discount services like Groupon and LivingSocial, it’s nice to know that you can still find high-fashion stores with prices to match. MSN has compiled a list of the most expensive shops in the United States, just in time for a Labor Day Weekend shopping spree.
To calculate and rank these retailers, MSN took into consideration average receipt amounts from millions of transactions between April 2010 and May 2011. Topping the chart is Oscar de la Renta’s New York City store, which sells a variety of ready to wear evening gowns, some of which reach into the five-digit range. Their average transaction during the studied time period was $3,217.
The rest of the top five is a mix of global fashion houses and boutiques. Giorgio Armani in New York came in second, followed by Loro Piana, Akris, and Maxfield respectively. Thirteen of the top 25 most expensive shops are located in New York City, firmly cemented the Big Apple as America’s premier shopping destination. In comparison, Beverly Hills has only two entrants on the list, with Dolce & Gabbana and Escada landing near the bottom of the list.
Loro Piana was Boston’s only shop on the list, and the rest of the chart-toppers are all in or near Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and New York, save for the San Francisco stalwart Wilkes-Bashford. This eclectic mix proves that you don’t need extravagant advertising or TV show placement to get customers through the door, but rather that quality rises above all.
