On May 14 Christie’s will offer an amazing assemblage of over 400 top-drawer timepieces at its Important Watches sale in Geneva. With a total estimated value of about $17.5 million, the eye-popping auction includes some of the finest antique, vintage and modern watches and wristwatches ever made.
Among the top lots is an incredibly rare gold two crown world time Patek Philippe wristwatch (right) with 24 hour indication and cloisonné enamel dial depicting the map of North America, reference 2523, manufactured in 1955 and estimated at up to about $2.8 million.
Also of note are the two most important antique watches by Breguet (left) seen at auction in a generation, recently-discovered and previously unrecorded publicly. Originating from the private collection of a European noble family, they were created by the hands of Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) himself.
“Certain watches are of such rarity and importance that they seldom, if ever, appear on the market, and when they do it is a feast for any watch collector,” notes Aurel Bacs, International Head of Christie’s Watch Department.
Also on offer are a stunning Patek Philippe pink gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phases, reference 2499 (estimated at up to about $1.95 million), and a rare Rolex stainless steel triple calendar wristwatch with moon phases, reference 8171 (estimated at up to about $325,000).
“As rare as a pink diamond or a Picasso painting from the ‘pink period,’ this is one of the only four known examples of this model,” Bacs notes, “and belongs to the elite of the elite of top vintage wristwatches still in private hands.” Visit Christies.com to see more.
