Other than a watch, the only other investment made with a lot of time and effort that does not give returns on investment (at least not in terms of cash anyway) is your car-unless you are using it for business. And just like a watch, and perhaps more so given the sheer size of the thing, your car tells us more about you than you may ever get to say. There are a lot of decisions that people make about you based on the car you are driving, perhaps even more than what you are wearing.

Your car is one of the most important choices you will make, mostly because of how much you will spend on it but also because of what image you intend to portray (consciously or subconsciously). So how do you pick a car that matches your personality while meeting your needs? You could take a personality test or just go with your gut. Either way, don’t make any rash decisions.

There are several ways of looking at the car brand versus personality but here is a simple take on it to get you started the next time you visit your local dealer.

1   Luxury cars: This obviously indicates wealth and a desire to want to enjoy it and show it off. When you have these gas guzzlers, you clearly are not concerned about money (and maybe not so much about the environment either…?). You are a confident, self-assured man who loves to make a statement and enjoy the finer things in life.

2    Mid-sized cars: You are probably a family man if you have one of these. You are therefore more concerned about safety and practicality than style and appearance. You are a man who has his priorities right and values the little things in life. Appearances are overrated to you.

3   Hatchbacks: You are also very practical. You see a car not so much as an extension of yourself but as a means to an end. You are very level headed and not too much of a crowd-pleaser, following the beat of your own drum. You are not aloof though, you care about the environment and about the people in it. You are also very sensible when it comes to money; you do not hoard it but neither do you spend it like it grows on trees.

4  Sports cars: You are a complete crowd pleaser. You love the attention; all eyes on you as you come down the street in that loud car. You are also probably a lot of fun, what with the need for speed, and if this is the only car you have, you are certainly not a family man. A good look is important to you more than the practicalities of life but then again, maybe you haven’t reached that place or are already way past it.

You may be reading this and laughing at the descriptions but this is not based on who you are but on what the car says about who you are. So pay attention to the kind of car you choose if you want to present a particular image.
