Sitting beneath the Parisian streets are a labyrinth of Catacombs created in the galleries of the former quarries, 65-feet below the ground. Transferred gradually between the 18th and mid-19th century, the ossuary contains the remains of approximately six million Parisians. Through narrow passageways and dark galleries, the catacombs are intriguingly arranged in a chilling display of high romantic taste. Above the entrance reads, “Arrête, c’est ici l’empire de la mort” meaning, “Halt, this is the realm of Death;” one of the many poems, maxims and sacred passages found on its walls.
