Spanish for “The Gate of the Sun,” Puerto del Sol is one of the most popular plazas in all of Madrid and is the center of the radial network of Spanish roads (Km 0). The area was formerly a gate in the wall that used to protect the city and today the ceremonial bell tower rings in the New Year.

Around the plaza are fountains, famous buildings, sculptures and a “kilometer 0” plaque. Located between several of Madrid’s busy neighborhoods, the Puerta del Sol is a perfect place to begin exploring the city.
