Luxurious "Wine Down' Spa at La Quinta Resort

Jill Weinlein

Staying one night at the exquisite La Quinta Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, I was treated to a 80 minute Wine Down Massage at Spa La Quinta. Changing into my robe and spa sandals, I sat in the Sage Lounge to await my massage therapist. While waiting in the comfortable earth tone serene room, a spa staff member brought me a flight of four wine tastes. Next to each glass were four small wooden bowls filled with different ZENTS therapeutic grade essential oils. This newer vinotherapy treatment at Spa La Quinta is a multi-sensory pairing of scents with wine.

The wines were presented from lightest to darkest. On the left side was a pour of Giesen Sauvignon Blanc from Marborough New Zealand. Taking a sip, I appreciated the aromatic blend of elderflower, kaffir lime and pink grapefruit. After another sip, I noted an herbal essence with vibrant citrus notes. It was paired with a Oolong ZENTS offering notes of bold citrus with a calming essence of lavender and oolong tea.

Next was a Sokol Blosser Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley, Oregon. It was paired with Mandarin ZENTS. As I sipped this white wine, I noticed an aroma of green apple and citrus,, with a hint of honeydew lingering on ther palate and a pleasing finish. The essential oil paired with this wine offered a memory of strolling through the oriental spice market with blends of exotic floral mandarin citrus with vanilla bean, a little ginger, nutmeg and cardamom.

Both of the next two wines were red, starting with the David Bynum Pinot Noir from the Russian River, California. With a warm ruby hue, this bright red wine was full of cherry, plums, baking spices and earthiness with each sip. The scent paired with this wine was my favorite. It was a musky Ore ZENTS providing a blend of intoxicating orris and sensual ylang ylang. There were notes of black pepper and clove.

The last glass of wine on the tasting tray was a Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California. It was paired with Earth ZENTS. Smelling this scent offered a clean and calming memory of forest springtime with sandalwood, bergamot and bay leaf.

My massage therapist Rosalia led me to a treatment room and inquired on my selected aromatic essential oil that she would be using during my massage. I told her ORE was my favorite and she shared with me that it was one of her favorites too.

During my 80 minute massage, Rosalia placed a container of Ore ZENTS under my nose and told me to inhale and exhale multipler times for an immersive therapeutic experience.

After the service, I received al generous pour of my favorite of the four wines to enjoy in the Sage Lounge, or out in the tranquility garden, or bubbling heated whirlpool.
