Getting a Diamond Authenticity Certificate for Wholesale Diamonds

Planning to buy an engagement ring soon and thinking about buying some loose diamonds for the mount? Sometimes, you can purchase wholesale diamonds online as well as from their suppliers much more affordably than a retail chain if you know what you're looking for. If you purchase one, pay attention to the 4 C's: cut, clarity, colour, and carat weight and add a fifth important one, certification.

Why diamond certification is important

Over the last 10 years, buying certified diamonds has become increasingly more important, especially if you purchase a quality diamond that's larger than half a carat.  In that instance, it should be certified with an internationally recognized company like the Gemological Institute of America(GIA). Companies like this use laboratory equipment to test the diamond grading specifications. While each company may have slightly different guidelines, one rule they all use is that they are stricter with better quality cut diamonds.

The Layout of a Diamond Certificate

A diamond certificate includes your diamond's certification number along with an optical fingerprint of the stone, otherwise known as a gemprint. It then features the diamond's inscription, which is laser imaged at 10 times its magnitude. The most in-depth part of the diamond certificate features an extensive grading analysis of the 4 C's, along with an analysis of the optical brilliance of the stone.

Grading the 4 C's

At least two graders work on each step to guarantee objectivity throughout the process. They begin by  weighing the diamond to determine the carat size as most customers have an idea on what size diamond they want. Graders place the diamond on a precise electronic scale and mark the exact weight to the nearest ten-thousandth of the carat.

Often the diamond's cut is the important part as it effects all of the other grades. Graders first look at the overall presentation of the stone and then check the finish to see how well it's been polished and if it removed any imperfections or scratches. In addition, they check on how evenly the facets were cut and how well they sit. The graders can rate diamond cuts anywhere from poor to excellent.

Next, they grade the color of the diamond in a standard viewing room, against the colour master scale. They do this in a room where no additional natural light can enter and alter the results. White diamonds are rated from D-Z, and those graded D through F are practically rare and colourless, while those rated G and H are typically the ideal standard. As you move further down the alphabet, graders find tints of yellow in the diamond. They will use as many graders as necessary until a general consensus is reached.

Finally, the main grader studies the clarity and magnifies it 10 times to assist with studying all the characteristics and see if there are any flaws like fracture filling or laser drilling. After more graders study the diamond's clarity, polish and finishing, they assign a grade, taking account the diamond's facets and symmetry as well. Diamond clarity is measured from IF which is internally flawless to VVS or VS which is of the norm for very slight imperfections.

Other Things to Look for on Your Diamond Certificate

In addition to an extensive analysis of the 4C's, check the certificate for magnified images of the diamond, as well as a diagram of the actual proportions of the stone, ,marking the facets they saw through laser imaging. The certificate should also feature an in-depth look at the brilliance and symmetry of the diamond.

If you're looking to buy loose diamonds or engagement rings, wholesale diamonds carries an extensive selection and all of their diamonds are certified.
