Sicily is a destination that rewards exploration, but every so often, a resort comes along that makes leaving entirely optional. Set across over 550 acres of olive groves, citrus trees and sun-drenched countryside along the island’s southwest coast, Verdura Resort is exactly that kind of place. With over a mile of private Mediterranean coastline, exceptional dining, two spectacular pools, an expansive spa, championship golf, family activities and its own beach club, this Rocco Forte property offers the rare luxury of having everything one could want in one beautifully designed Sicilian setting.

Located between the coastal town of Sciacca and the Valley of the Temples, the Verdura Resort feels both wonderfully secluded and distinctly connected to Sicily. The resort’s low-slung architecture allows the landscape to remain the star, with guest rooms, suites and private villas thoughtfully positioned among olive groves and overlooking the Mediterranean. Terracotta tones, natural textures and clean contemporary lines lend the accommodations a strong sense of place without leaning into predictable Italian design.

The sheer scale of the resort quickly becomes part of its charm. Verdura feels like its own private world, yet it never feels overwhelming. Complimentary bicycles make getting around half the fun, and our family loved riding along the pathways that weave between the rooms, restaurants, pools, spa and sea. Golf carts are also readily available, but there was something wonderfully freeing about hopping on our bikes and deciding where the day would take us.

Most mornings began with an expansive breakfast that extended well beyond a traditional hotel buffet. Fresh fruit, Sicilian specialties, pastries, made-to-order dishes and plenty of options for children set the tone for days that were as active (or as wonderfully lazy!) as we wanted them to be. Verdura also offered one small daily ritual that became a major family highlight: complimentary gelato. Few things capture the pleasure of an Italian summer quite like ending a sun-filled afternoon with a scoop (or several!) in hand.

The heart of the resort is its pair of stunning swimming pools. Surrounded by palms and wide-open Sicilian skies, they offer plenty of room for families to swim while still preserving the polished, peaceful atmosphere adults crave. We could easily spend hours moving between the water and our loungers, with nothing on the agenda beyond deciding when to order lunch.

Just beyond, Verdura’s private coastline adds another dimension to the experience. The resort’s beach club makes settling in beside the Mediterranean effortless, while its watersports area gives more adventurous guests plenty of ways to get out onto the sea. Swimming in the clear blue water, relaxing along the shore and enjoying a leisurely lunch overlooking the Mediterranean made it easy to spend an entire day by the sea without ever leaving the property.

Should the pull of Sicily prove too strong to remain within Verdura’s expansive grounds, the resort’s concierge can curate a beautiful beach day farther along the island’s southwest coast. Scala dei Turchi is an essential stop, named for the dramatic white limestone cliffs that cascade toward the brilliant turquoise sea like a natural staircase. After taking in this extraordinary landscape, settle in for lunch and an afternoon by the water at Lounge Beach Scala dei Turchi, where reserving beach chairs is a must. It is a wonderfully effortless way to experience one of Sicily’s most distinctive stretches of coastline… and one of the rare excursions tempting enough to draw guests away from Verdura (your social media feed will thank you).

Back at Verdura, families are met with an equally impressive array of ways to spend their days. Verdùland, the resort’s dedicated children’s program, offers activities ranging from cooking and beach games to tennis, golf and water sports. Complimentary bicycles for both children and adults are stationed throughout the property, inviting guests to hop on and explore the sprawling resort at their leisure. The wider resort adds championship golf courses, tennis and padel courts, state-of-the-art fitness facilities and sporting academies to the mix. Whether family members want to spend the day together or pursue entirely different interests, Verdura manages to make both possibilities feel seamless.

The Irene Forte Spa was one of the true standouts of our stay. Spanning approximately 40,000 square feet, the spa feels like a resort within the resort, with treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, fitness facilities and four outdoor thalassotherapy pools that use mineral-rich seawater. The experience was restorative from beginning to end and offered the perfect counterpoint to our more active days. At a property with so much designed for families, it was lovely to find a space devoted entirely to slowing down and staying present.

Dining is another reason Verdura works so well as an all-in-one escape. The resort’s restaurants offer enough variety in both atmosphere and cuisine that staying on property never feels repetitive. Each experience celebrates Sicilian ingredients in a different way, from elegant fine dining and seaside seafood to relaxed, family-friendly trattoria fare.

Ristorante Zagara set the stage for one of the most meaningful evenings of our trip, our daughter’s birthday dinner. As the resort’s signature fine-dining restaurant, Zagara felt polished and special without becoming overly formal. Beautifully prepared local seafood, Sicilian vegetables, handmade pastas and regional wines made it exactly the kind of celebratory meal we had hoped for… and a wonderful way to mark her ninth birthday in Sicily.

At Amare, the Mediterranean becomes part of the dining room. Set beside the sea, the restaurant specializes in freshly caught fish, lobster, crudo and simply prepared seafood best enjoyed as the light begins to soften over the water. Our sunset dinner by the sea became one of the most memorable evenings of our time at Verdura.

Ristorante Liolà Trattoria offered something entirely different: a relaxed, spirited celebration of Sicilian cooking with wood-fired dishes (still dreaming of our pizzas!), familiar regional favorites and a warm family atmosphere. It was an easy restaurant to enjoy with children, yet the quality of the food ensured that it never felt like a compromise for the adults. That balance, sophisticated but welcoming, is something Verdura executes particularly well throughout the property.

As impressive as the resort’s dining was, one meal beyond its gates became a core memory for our entire family. Cantine De Gregorio, near Sciacca, is the kind of hidden gem travelers dream of discovering in Sicily. Set among vineyards and olive groves, the historic winery pairs its wines with wholesome, traditional Sicilian dishes prepared by its chef. As we lingered over tiramisu beneath twinkling lights, the children ran freely through the vineyard, laughing and playing as the evening unfolded around us. It was simple, joyful and utterly magical—the kind of moment that stays with you long after the trip has ended. Guests can also visit the 18th-century cellar and old watchtower, where the views stretch from Sciacca toward Selinunte, before enjoying a multi-course meal accompanied by the winery’s own pours. There was a warmth and authenticity to Cantine De Gregorio that made the evening particularly memorable. The setting was atmospheric, the food was generous and deeply rooted in the region, and the wines brought each course to life. Verdura may make it tempting never to leave, but this is one off-property experience absolutely worth the outing.

That is ultimately what makes Verdura Resort so special. It offers the scope and amenities of a grand European resort while preserving the warmth, beauty and unmistakable character of Sicily. Days can begin with breakfast overlooking the sea, continue with bike rides, beach time, watersports or a spa treatment, and end over handmade pasta, freshly caught fish or a celebratory dinner beneath the Sicilian sky.

For families, couples, golfers and travelers who simply want to unpack once and have the best of a destination within reach, Verdura is difficult to top. Between the pools, private beach, extraordinary spa, memorable restaurants and thoughtful touches (yes, especially the daily gelato!) it became far more than a place to stay during our time in Sicily. Verdura was a destination unto itself, and one our entire family would happily return to.
