There’s no denying it: Marrakech is having a major travel moment. Once considered an exotic, far-flung destination, the vibrant Moroccan city has quickly risen to the top of luxury travelers’ must-visit lists… and for good reason. With a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, design, and history, Marrakech offers an intoxicating sensory experience that feels worlds away, yet increasingly within reach. With expanded air access, including new long-haul routes from the United States via Delta Air Lines, getting to Morocco has never been more seamless… especially for East Coast travelers looking for something beyond the typical European circuit. Add in a wave of beautifully restored riads, a booming culinary scene, and global attention from tastemakers and designers, and it’s clear: Marrakech isn’t just trending… it’s defining the next era of aspirational travel.

Tucked deep within the labyrinthine alleyways of the Marrakech Medina, a mere 20 minutes’ drive from the international airport, where the hum of daily life pulses through spice-scented souks and sun-drenched courtyards, lies one of the city’s most enchanting hidden gems, La Sultana Marrakech. The hotel is a spectacular sanctuary hidden behind the city’s ancient walls. From the moment you step through its unassuming entrance, La Sultana reveals itself as a serene oasis… a striking contrast to the vibrant energy just outside its doors. The property is a collection of five interconnected riads, each thoughtfully restored to preserve its original architectural integrity. Hand-carved cedar wood, intricate zellige tilework, and ornate plaster detailing create an atmosphere that feels both over-the-top regal, as well as meaningfully authentic. Every corner tells a unique and deeply rooted story. Unlike larger luxury hotels, La Sultana feels intimate and transportive, offering guests the rare sensation of stepping into a private Moroccan residence rather than a commercial space.

Each room and suite at La Sultana Marrakech is entirely unique, where no two are alike, and each is thoughtfully themed, adding an extra layer of storytelling to your stay. Rich textiles, antique furnishings, and locally sourced materials create spaces that feel curated rather than designed. Think rose petal-strewn beds and baths, glowing lantern light, and deep soaking tubs that invite you to slow down completely. During our stay, we were tucked into the Camel Room, one of the property’s most distinctive suites, and we were instantly charmed by its character. From the intricately crafted camel-shaped coffee table to the striking artwork above the bed, every detail felt intentional and deeply rooted in Moroccan culture. It’s this level of personalization and creativity that transforms each room from simply a place to sleep into an experience all its own. Many suites open onto private terraces or overlook tranquil courtyards filled with palm trees and the gentle trickle of fountains. These small, sensory moments truly define the magic of staying here.

Breakfast at La Sultana Marrakech is truly a feast for the senses, and a moment to savor each morning on-site. Set around the hotel’s stunning central courtyard pool, mornings unfold slowly and beautifully, with sunlight filtering through palm trees and vibrant, beautifully colored bougainvillea cascading throughout the space, adding a striking pop of color at every turn. Tables are filled with an abundant spread of fresh juices, warm breads, delicate pastries, and traditional and Moroccan specialties, making it as visually captivating as it is delicious. It’s the kind of setting that encourages you to linger just a little longer, soaking in the magic of the Medina before the day begins.

Dinner on-site is equally memorable, transforming the property into an intimate, candlelit escape. As lanterns flicker and soft local music drifts through the air, the atmosphere becomes undeniably romantic and serene. Whether dining beneath the stars or within one of the hotel’s beautifully adorned spaces, the experience feels deeply rooted in place… elegant, atmospheric, and unmistakably special (exactly why we chose to celebrate my husband’s birthday there).

One of La Sultana’s most breathtaking features is its expansive rooftop terrace, offering panoramic views of Marrakech and, on clear days, the distant Atlas Mountains. It’s the kind of place where time seems to stretch… perfect for long, leisurely lunches or sunset aperitifs as the city shifts from golden hour to twilight. During our stay, the rooftop became even more memorable as we took part in a traditional Moroccan cooking class—baking delicate pastries to perfection and learning the art of blending fresh mint tea, a ritual in itself. The hotel also offers hands-on experiences like bread making and preparing classic Moroccan dishes, giving guests a deeper, more flavorful connection to the culture right from above the city’s storied skyline. The rooftop restaurant serves refined Moroccan cuisine with a modern touch, making it an ideal setting for both romantic dinners and relaxed midday meals under the Moroccan sun.
No stay at La Sultana Marrakech is complete without a visit to its subterranean spa, where centuries-old rituals come to life. The traditional hammam experience, complete with black soap exfoliation and steam baths, is both invigorating and deeply restorative. It’s not just a treatment… it’s a cultural immersion that leaves you feeling entirely renewed.

What makes the experience even more thoughtful is the hotel’s attention to families traveling with children. In a beautifully considered touch, younger guests are also welcomed into the spa experience with a gentle kids’ hand and foot 30-minute massage, an introduction to relaxation that feels both playful and special. My kids also fell in love with their hand-sewn, personalized camel stuffed animals… thoughtful souvenirs that traveled home with us and will remain special keepsakes for years to come. It’s these small but meaningful details that elevate La Sultana into something truly exceptional for travelers of all ages.

Positioned in the historic Kasbah district, La Sultana Marrakech offers prime access to some of Marrakech’s most iconic landmarks, including the Saadian Tombs and El Badi Palace. Yet despite its central location, the hotel maintains an atmosphere of complete tranquility, something that feels almost impossible in a city as vibrant as Marrakech. What truly elevates the experience is not just the property’s prime location, however, it’s the hotel’s exceptional concierge team, who begin crafting our stay long before we even arrived. Ahead of our trip, they curated a deeply personalized itinerary that brought the destination to life in the most meaningful way. Our first day was spent on a guided, full-day tour with an incredibly knowledgeable local named Medhi, someone we connected with so much, we still keep in touch via WhatsApp. The day unfolded like a dream: visiting local artisans and workshops through his company Medina Workshops, blending our own custom perfumes and colognes (a family favorite!), selecting fabrics for beautifully handcrafted slippers (Magazin Des Babouches pulled out all of the special touches), and ending in the city’s bustling central square where we were expertly guided through the must-visit shops.

Another standout was a sidecar experience… an unforgettable adventure that took us beyond the Medina and into its outskirts before zipping back through the lively streets (with a spontaneous ice cream stop that the kids still talk about!). The concierge also seamlessly secured coveted tickets to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and Majorelle Garden, complete with a charming horse carriage ride to and from, as well as a sought-after rooftop lunch reservation and a thoughtfully curated list of the best shopping boutiques in the area. From hard-to-get dining reservations to once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every detail was handled with care and precision, allowing us to simply immerse ourselves in the magic of Marrakech.

Beyond the walls of La Sultana, Marrakech reveals itself as a culinary destination in its own right… one where dining is not just a meal, but a total sensory experience. The city’s food scene is elevated, eclectic, and deeply atmospheric, blending traditional Moroccan flavors with global influences, incredible entertainment, and impressive immersive design. Some of our most memorable meals took place across the city, each offering a completely different lens into Marrakech’s vibrant dining scene. Lunch at DarDar Rooftop was a standout, with its breezy rooftop setting, chic crowd, and sweeping views over the Medina… perfect for lingering over fresh, flavor-packed dishes in the warm Moroccan sun. Dinner at La Trattoria transported us to a hidden Italian oasis, tucked behind lush gardens and candlelit pathways, where refined cuisine meets old-world charm in one of the city’s most romantic settings. At Bo Zin, the energy shifted to something more contemporary and electric… a stylish, open-air space where Asian-inspired cuisine, music, and a fashionable crowd come together seamlessly, making it a favorite for those looking for a lively night out. Then there was Palais Jad Mahal… a true showstopper and, without question, one of the most unforgettable dining experiences of our trip. Part restaurant, the other part performance, Palais Jad Mahal delivers a full-scale dinner club experience that feels both opulent and wildly fun. Think richly decorated interiors, velvet draping, glowing lanterns, and a nonstop lineup of live entertainment – from dancers to fire shows to costumed musicians – that keeps the energy high all night long. It was such a vibrant, immersive scene that we even let the kids stay up until midnight to take it all in (sorry grandparents!), completely captivated by the spectacle unfolding around them. Take note, Las Vegas… this is how dinner clubs are done. Together, these experiences prove that Marrakech isn’t just a feast for the senses visually… it’s a culinary playground that deserves just as much attention.

La Sultana Marrakech isn’t just about luxury… it’s about feeling. It’s waking up to sunlight dancing across tiled courtyards, lingering over breakfasts framed by bougainvillea, and ending your evenings under lantern-lit skies as the city hums softly beyond its walls. It’s the rare kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left… not just in photos, but in memory, in scent, in sensation. In a destination that’s rapidly capturing the world’s attention, La Sultana offers something even more valuable: a sense of intimacy, authenticity, and soul. In a city as unforgettable as Marrakech, it’s these intangible moments that transform a trip into something that lingers long after you’ve left.
