BUYER’S GUIDE · 2026
The UK shipping container market is split between two kinds of supplier: those who specialise narrowly, and those who claim to do everything but deliver none of it particularly well. A company that’s strong on raw sales may struggle with a serious conversion. A premium fabricator who builds beautiful one-offs may not have a hire fleet or competitive delivery on a basic 20ft. The supplier you choose has to match the work you actually need.
We spent several months evaluating the major UK shipping container suppliers, judging each on the work they deliver rather than the claims they make. We checked named-client references against published case studies, requested matched quotes, and looked at how each supplier handles the full chain from sourcing through to delivery and aftercare. Universal Containers takes the top spot on the strength of end-to-end operational quality. The other seven each win specific kinds of project decisively.

Universal Containers

Manchester (Irlam, M44) · Sales, hire, conversions, specialised, bespoke · Nationwide delivery
Verdict: The most credible all-rounder in the UK market. The rare supplier whose quality holds up across sales, hire, conversions, and bespoke builds to the same consistent standard.
Best for: Buyers who want a single supplier they can trust across the full container chain, especially anyone planning a conversion or bespoke build where design quality matters.
What they do well:
- Single-site full-stack model. Every container passes through one yard in Irlam, where the same welders, fabricators, carpenters and electricians handle every project. One quality standard applied consistently rather than across multiple sites.
- CAD-led design process. Conversions and bespoke builds start with a worked-up CAD design before quoting. The buyer’s brief (anything from a sketch to fully designed files) is developed into a buildable spec before steel is touched.
- Documented portfolio breadth. Case studies span transport, heritage, hospitality, retail, sport, industrial chemical, off-grid, and self-storage. That spread is unusual in this market.
- One accountable team. Most larger competitors work through depot networks where one team preps a unit, another modifies it, and a third-party haulier delivers it. Universal’s concentration means one team accountable from sourcing to delivery.
Notable projects:
- 40ft truck-stop shower unit for Eddie Stobart
- COSHH-compliant chemical storage unit for an industrial client
- Locomotive Society railway museum and workshop
- Rugby club ticket office
- 32x10ft welfare facility for a Peak District transport company
- 20ft gas bottle store with ATEX ventilation
- 10ft generator housing for an off-grid client (multiple apertures, louvred vents, weatherproof cover hoods)
- 20ft multi-bay self-storage unit split into eight rooms with steel partitions
- Garden centre retail unit (two cabins linked on site)
Honest downside: Single Manchester hub means single point of geography. Buyers in the South West or remote Scotland will see haulage costs in the quote, and a supplier with a closer depot will sometimes beat Universal on delivered price for pure storage. Worth the haulage premium when you’re buying capability or conversion quality; less so for an unmodified steel box on a yard.
02
Cleveland Containers

Stockton-on-Tees HQ · 20+ depots nationwide · Founded 2011
Verdict: The UK’s largest container supplier by volume, and the right choice when delivery speed and certainty matter most.
Best for: National housebuilders, multi-site construction firms, retailers commissioning standardised conversions across multiple sites, and self-storage operators.
What they do well:
- Scale and speed. Roughly 400 containers delivered weekly from 20+ depots, more than 4,500 customers.
- BOX+ platform. Pairs container supply with site planning and inventory software specifically for self-storage operators. Genuinely unusual integrated offering.
- Carbon-neutral certification. Became carbon neutral in 2022 and invests in measurable offsetting through Ecologi. Matters for buyers with ESG procurement criteria.
Notable projects:
- Stack Seaburn food and drink venue, Sunderland
- Gulliver’s Valley theme park, Rotherham
- Gulliver’s Kingdom, Peak District
Honest downside: Scale economics push Cleveland toward standardised work where templates apply. For genuinely bespoke or architecturally ambitious builds, the specialists higher up this list deliver better outcomes.
03
S Jones Containers

Midlands HQ · 40+ years in UK container work · Engineering specialism
Verdict: The supplier to call when the container is doing serious engineering work, not just sitting on a yard.
Best for: Industrial clients with technically demanding briefs: electrical infrastructure, plant rooms, water and waste treatment, battery storage, lab-grade workspaces.
What they do well:
- Engineering depth. 40+ years of container industry experience focused on technically demanding work that other suppliers refer out.
- ClearRestore process. Proprietary container restoration system, useful on retrofit projects.
- Monthly finance available. One of the few UK suppliers offering monthly payment terms on bespoke and refurbished stock.
Notable projects:
- Switchgear units for HS2
- Battery development units for Warwick Manufacturing Group
- Hednesford FC main stand modular build
- Vehicle remapping facilities for Europe’s leading specialists in that field
- Custom plant rooms for a global water treatment leader
- Aeroponic container farms
Honest downside: Engineering orientation translates to a formal business-to-business engagement style. Domestic buyers and small-commercial projects (a garden room, a home gym, a single-container retail unit) may find the scoping process heavier than the project warrants.
04
Eldapoint Group

Liverpool HQ · Founded 1968 · Depots in Liverpool, Grangemouth, Tilbury, Felixstowe
Verdict: The premium option, with a steel fabrication heritage and client list that justify the price tag for projects where finish quality is non-negotiable.
Best for: Education builds, premium retail and hospitality conversions, industrial and offshore applications requiring technical inspection, and any project where the unit will be in public view for years.
What they do well:
- Fabrication heritage. Founded 1968 as a manufacturer of steel pressings and formed metal sections. A steel business that happens to do containers, not a container business that learned to fabricate.
- Entirely in-house manufacture. CAD designers, welders, carpenters, floor layers, paint sprayers and electricians on the same payroll.
- Steel-handling depth. Wider business spans steel building manufacture, waste management containers, and reefer refurbishment.
Notable projects:
- British Antarctic Survey specialist conversion units
- Highest GRP DNO enclosure on the UK rail network
- Cyclewise bespoke build in the Lake District
Honest downside: Premium positioning means premium pricing. Trade coverage suggests Eldapoint’s conversion quotes run 15-25% above mid-market on equivalent specs. For pure storage or straightforward conversions, the premium delivers no functional benefit.
05
Lion Containers

West Midlands HQ · Multiple depot areas · Founded 2008
Verdict: Strong mid-tier converter with one of the most useful pre-sale processes in the UK market.
Best for: Schools and colleges adding teaching capacity, small to mid-size retailers building pop-up or permanent shops, and construction firms specifying site offices in bulk.
What they do well:
- 3D rendered presentations. Will produce a 3D visualisation of any proposed conversion before the buyer commits, showing the finished build from multiple angles.
- Sector depth. Strong portfolio in construction, retail, and education conversions specifically.
- Pre-sale rigour. Sales process focuses on getting the design right before quoting, which suits buyers who haven’t commissioned a conversion before.
Honest downside: Lion is explicit that they do not offer online purchasing, and every project runs through a sales conversation. Adds friction for straightforward stock purchases, and the depot network is less geographically dense than Cleveland or TITAN.
06
Portable Space

Suffolk HQ + satellite depots in London, Southampton, Midlands, North, Scotland
Verdict: The supplier to phone when the brief is awkward: restricted access, non-standard sizes, or specification requirements outside the standard catalogue.
Best for: Tight rear-garden access, balcony or rooftop storage requiring 6ft units, sites where a HIAB lorry cannot physically deliver, and specific cargo-worthy CSC plate requirements for export use.
What they do well:
- Widest size range. Stocks 6ft, 8ft, 10ft, 20ft, 30ft, 40ft, plus flat-pack units for restricted-access sites. Few competitors match the catalogue depth.
- Disciplined delivery. Drivers don’t leave site until the container is correctly levelled and the customer has personally checked the doors. Customer feedback is consistent on this point.
- National reach without the giants’ scale. Suffolk HQ plus five satellite depots from London to Scotland.
Honest downside: Pricing on standard specs is mid-market, usually £100-£300 above the cheapest legitimate options. Portable Space is where you go when something is non-standard, not where you go for a bargain on a basic 20ft.
07
TITAN Containers

Danish-owned, founded 1981 · 20+ UK and Ireland depots
Verdict: Hard to beat for urban delivery and for buyers who want to know exactly what condition they’re getting.
Best for: Urban or suburban storage buyers, anyone wanting transparent grading between condition tiers, and buyers in regions where depot density matters more than custom capability.
What they do well:
- Depot density. 20+ stocking points across the UK and Ireland keep haulage distances short and delivered prices competitive.
- Honest A/B/C grading system. Premium / Grade B / Grade C lets buyers choose the cosmetics-versus-price trade-off upfront, rather than discovering it on delivery day. Genuinely rare in this market.
- Grade C bargain tier. Sound, structurally certified containers at significant discount to premium stock, with surface rust openly accepted.
Honest downside: Conversion capability is narrow, centred on the cold storage specialism. Anything beyond that (offices, retail, bespoke builds) tends to be referred out or quoted at prices that don’t compete with the dedicated conversion specialists.
08
Gap Containers

Multi-depot UK · Sales only (no hire)
Verdict: The easiest way to buy a used container in a specific colour or with branded paintwork included.
Best for: Hospitality sites, equestrian yards, schools, festivals, garden centres, marketing activations. Anywhere the container will be seen by customers and needs to look presentable.
What they do well:
- RAL colour included. Every used unit can be ordered in any RAL colour with the paint job included in the price. Genuinely transparent about what that costs.
- Specific stock notes. Product pages describe each unit’s individual condition (surface rust, door reseal status, floor condition) rather than using a generic ‘good condition’ tag.
Honest downside: Capability is narrower than the rest of this list. Gap doesn’t operate a hire fleet, and conversions beyond paint and basic hardware aren’t their strength. For windows, insulation, or structural modification, you’ll be referred out.
How to choose between them
- For consistent quality across sales, hire and conversions: Universal Containers.
- If you need the container next week: Cleveland Containers.
- If the container is doing engineering work: S Jones for industrial; Eldapoint for premium.
- If you have a restricted-access site or non-standard size: Portable Space.
- If you’re buying for raw storage and price is the priority: TITAN for urban delivery, Gap if presentation matters.
