The new luxury travel trend - luxury serviced apartments

In 12 years in the super yacht industry I had the opportunity and the duty to travel extensively in some of the most luxurious locations the world has to offer.

It might sound odd but luxury hotels with very few exceptions tend to look and feel all the same after a while. Don’t get me wrong, if you are in and out of a city like Dubai or Monaco for some sort of business event or meeting and you are by yourself a hotel room is your most efficient option. However, if like me you like to intertwine business and pleasure during your travels and you are about to spend a not-too-short period of time (anything above 3 days), in a city like London for example you might agree that hotel rooms become rather boring and hardly make you feel at home.

In fact, even some of the most well known brands in the Middle East, one that comes to mind is Rotana, has craftily created a more home-like feeling with serviced apartments extending the brand to Villa Rotana. An added romance borrowed from the Italian language feels quite necessary there. Throughout my travelling existence, I discovered the luxury, the freedom and the privacy provided, in my view, only by serviced apartments, which is now my doubtless choice at least in some destinations.

Why are serviced apartments better than hotel rooms?  Well for starters they make you experience the location you are in much more as a local, which I personally believe is utterly enriching. If you are travelling with more people, being family, friends or even work colleagues the bonding experience you’ll get from sharing the same apartments will make you feel a lot more home and it’s incredibly more fun. After all, any experience is more enriching when shared with someone, better yet if it’s someone you care for.

If you travel as a single man or woman, well don’t even get me started with the after parties. Have you tried to have a bit of a party in a hotel room?  Unless you are the ruler of a country or a rock star the hotel management will always complain and try to limit your fun. In a serviced apartment in London for example, when most of the clubs are closed or they are members-only and you really can’t be bothered. It’s the time for the after party, right there, you’ll be grateful to have chosen a serviced apartment.

Neighbours are not going to complain because they are used to it and they know you are not there for too long, and the morning after you are not going to need to clean.  Lastly, if you get back home (late) with a partner you are not going to be embarrassed by the looks of the night receptionist who will hypocritically smile at you will judging you for a completely normal behaviour. Let’s face it that night receptionist is simply jealous and would have done the same if he/she had the same disposable income you have but as she/he doesn’t, there you go, they will give you the look or even worse ask you kindly to register your guest if he/she is spending the night.

As a personal note, I love to cook a healthy meal after a long day or a nice Italian ‘pasta alla carbonara’ for a new friend that has joined for dinner much more than paying an exorbitant bill to go to a restaurant I’m trying for the first (and last) time.  Needless to say, if you are single, you know that cooking for someone will exponentially increases your chances of success.  Where are you going to do that in a hotel room ? Nowhere, once again my choice for any travel but especially one where I want to treat myself is a luxurious serviced apartment.

In brief, if you haven’t got it already, trust me try a serviced apartment next time you are in London for example, and you’ll know what I mean.
