If you’re a foodie, or at least appreciate when you’re being offered exceptional quality, chances are that having a range of great restaurants to choose from will have a lot of sway over where you book your next break. We’re just the same here at Latitude 50, so that’s why we’ve been exploring Cornwall by means of our palates –and the results have been very pleasing! Here are the culinary delights we’ve discovered…

The Wheelhouse, Falmouth

This quirky, friendly restaurant, located down a tiny side-street in Falmouth, has been full to the rafters ever since it opened it’s doors 2 years ago. They serving a simple shell fish menu, with a choice of mussels, scallops, crab and prawns, accompanied by chive butter, chips, salad and a choice of red or white house wines, but the food here is nothing short of delicious!

Everything is super-fresh and very tasty – it’s the real stuff of cementing seaside holiday memories. Booking is essential if you hope to get in on the feast, but prices are very reasonable at around £20 a head for seafood galore and a glass or two of something equally scrumptious.

Nathan Outlaws, St Enodoc Hotel, Rock

A visit to Nathan Outlaws at the St Enodoc Hotel is a very special experience indeed. Begin to imagine the freshest seafood and locally sourced meats, paired with flavour sensations, then to send them to Michelin 2 Star level and you’re getting close. Nathan Outlaw’s provides an intimate dining experience, as the restaurant serves just twenty-four covers each night, so you can expect impeccable service from the team and food you’ll still be talking about next Christmas. The tasting menu is £75 per person, with an accompanying wine flight offered for £60.

Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, Padstow

Although it’s been running for many years now, the Seafood Restaurant is still one of the hottest places in Cornwall to get a table. Located overlooking the estuary in the pretty harbour town of Padstow, you’ll be enchanted by the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Don’t leave without tasting the local Porthilly oysters and ordering the sashmi, which is prepared right in front of you. A visit here is an experience we’d like to repeat very soon! Lunch is £37 for 3 courses and the 7 course tasting menu for dinner comes in at a very reasonable £67.

Pandora’s Inn, Mylor

Prepare to fall in love with this traditional thatched pub the minute that you cross the threshold. With crackling open fires creating a warming atmosphere in winter and an extensive sun-deck to catch a few rays in summer, the Pandora’s is an ideal pub for any time of year. They serve fantastic gastro-pub fare, from home cooked pies to a very good Ploughman’s lunch. They also do a great cream-tea and have a range of good quality local ales. You can get lunch for around £10 and main courses range from £10 – £18.

Paul Ainsworth at Number 6, Padstow

Another of Cornwall’s Michelin starred gems is Number 6 in Padstow. This is a highly unpretentious restaurant, which doesn’thave a dress code, welcomes children and consistently serves up some of the most delicious food you will find in the country, let alone county. The emphasis is on seasonal, local produce, with a modern twist on traditional Cornish and British cuisine. From the divine Cornish Duck starter, to the show-stopping Cornish Sea Bream with Saffron, we can assure you you’re in for nothing short of a huge treat. A 3 course lunch, including wine flight is very reasonable at £38 per head. Dinner is from the A la Carte menu, with prices at around £12 for a starter, £25 for a main and £9 for a pudding – which we thoroughly recommend you don’t leave without tasting!
