Barbie Lives in a Drab Colorless World According to Moschino's Latest Campaign

After Jeremy Scott’s high-energy, Barbie Moschino S/S 15 show we couldn’t wait to own the hot pink collection, so it’s safe to say that we’ve been anxiously expecting this campaign for quite some time. But now that it’s here—to say it let us down would be an understatement. For Spring 2015, Moschino’s latest features a black and while campaign that is less Barbie dream and more—Tumblr fail. Not only is the bright, sparkling plastic collection totally drab in a boring grayscale color scheme, but it seems there are some serious Photoshop issues going on. Is Sasha Luss, front and center, missing a leg? That limb is just gone. We understand smoothing out the occasional wrinkles or slimming out a model’s thigh gap, but offing her whole leg? Did no one catch this in final edits?

Photographed by Steven Meisel, the campaign seems to be following the spring trend of black and white campaigns on empty backgrounds. While the neutral shades can make for a chic palette, most people are looking for some color and pop in spring, especially when we’re smack dab in the middle of a bleak winter. And with a collection that banked so much of its success on the Barbie-pink shade, the colorless ads just seem—depressing. Anna Ewers, Hollie May Saker, and Sasha Luss look stunning on their own, but this campaign isn’t doing them (or the collection) any favors.
