Runway Inspired Hairstyles to Beat the Heat

With summer here and the months progressively getting hotter and hotter, you’re probably looking for a better way to wear your hair to stay cool. Rather than throwing on a hat to block the sun or even worse, staying inside, take a look at these low-key and trendy ways to style your locks. There are a multitude of summer hair fashions on the runway, so you have some very feminine looks to choose from—unless you’d rather chop it all off, that is.
Braids are still in full swing. Those fun twists we've been putting in our hair since the third grade aren't going to be going anywhere soon. Braids are a versatile hairstyle that can be pig-tailed, fishtailed, twisted and knotted and look good on everyone. Side braids are simple enough to do on yourself and can keep you looking laid back, unlike the giant thick avant-garde braids of the runway. Leaving it loose and a bit undone gives you a soft romantic summer look and keeps your hair out of your face, which can be a lifesaver with that ocean breeze. Try some fun colorful bands with bobbles to add a little fun to your braid. Marc by Marc Jacobs Bolt Cluster Hair Ties $32.
Messy buns are making a huge comeback on the runway and the messier the better. If you can roll out of bed and twist your hair up, you’re pretty much good to go. Looking like a knotted bun that you slept in the night before, this will probably be your most fashion forward style. For those of you with straight hair, this is going to be a little harder to pull off, try spritzing your hair with beach spray beforehand to give it some texture, (and the scent of coconuts) then wrap into a low bun and pull free loose strands. Unite Beach Day Texturizing Spray $30.

Ponytails can seem like the most boring and overdone hairstyle you have ever seen, but designers from Chloé to Nanette Lepore are using the classic look in their latest runway shows. To keep your hair from looking like you’re about to go for a run, wear it low and loose on your head, keeping it just a little messy in the back. If you need a little more oomph, twist your hair around the band or use a bright headband to bring some life to your classic look. Salvatore Ferragamo Skinny Grosgrain Headband with Bow $160.

While mussy, tousled, and a just-crawled-out-of-bed look is always a hair trend for summer, sleeker twists are showing up on the runway that can add a bit of sophistication to your do. Valentino’s collection was laden with beautiful twists that can carry you from work to dinner parties and back again. Plus think of how beachy your hair will look when you pull those twists out? Instant summer waves! If you’re not blessed with sleek hair, prep it with hair oil and blow dry straight before twisting and securing with bobby pins. Diptyque Volie Satin-Satin Oil for Body and Hair $58.
It’s the middle of summer and, of course, floral is in. For this look you can always wear your hair down and loose giving you a soft Mother Nature appearance or combine any of the previous styles with a few flowers. Bigger is better on the runway and while you may not need a whole halo of roses for your head, it can absolutely be a statement piece. Wear a different flower in your hair each day over the course of the summer and you’ll feel much more in tune with the season. Eugenia Kim Marique Velvet and Georgette Flower Crown Headband $155.
