Recently, I received news from MAN of the SEA brand owner, Don Weismantel, that he’d just completed an exciting project with rocker Mandy Lion. The collaboration was facilitated by music artist manager David Arden, who has represented bands such as Air Supply, Black Sabbath, ELO and Wizard. Mandy had expressed an interest in becoming a brand ambassador for the MAN of the SEA. Presumably he’d seen the publicity about “Lucky Jack”, the incredible watch made for Russell Crowe and admired the craftsmanship. After several conversations, ‘Peg Leg Don’ created a wonderful timepiece called “King of the Jungle”

It’s always inspiring to hear of micro brands getting recognition for their work in an industry dominated by large groups. I first became aware of MAN of the SEA on a bronze watch forum and instantly knew they were special. Don Weismantel goes to extraordinary lengths to create very ornate cases with meticulous detail. This, I believe, separates him from the masses. As Mandy Lion is a showman, it was only fitting that the “King of the Jungle” custom watch has a bold aesthetic, and Don has definitely delivered on that front.

This is the third time I have reviewed a MAN of the SEA watch, and each model has its own unique identity. On the brand’s website, clients have the opportunity to create their own custom watch. Meaning there are various case and dial designs to choose from. However, for Mandy Lion, Don Weismantel has created something completely bespoke. The 48mm hand cast bronze case is adorned with 3D skulls, lions and large fangs. This theme is continued on the multi-layered dial with an exquisite painting of a roaring lion. Other highlights include a Roman Numeral chapter ring, textured bronze crown and 2mm sapphire crystal lens. Overall, the gothic aesthetic is very effective, and the quality is superb.

At the heart of the watch is a Swiss-made self-winding movement sourced from manufacturer Selita. The Calibre SW200-1 comprises 26 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. On the case back, Don Weismantel has created a beautiful etched illustration of Mandy Lion. Functionally, the “King of the Jungle” features hours, minutes and seconds. The watch is also water-resistant to a depth of 100 metres and has a power reserve of 40 hours.

As a perfect finale, the “King of the Jungle” is presented on a 26mm handcrafted strap. For more information about MAN of the SEA, follow this link
